Earthed Information: Building using cob
Cob is an ancient earth building technique which uses a combination of earth, straw, sand and water. These ingredients can be mixed together by hand, using tarps, or by machinery. The mix is formed into lumps or "cobs" which are pressed together to form the walls of a building, rather like building a giant clay pot...

Earthed Information: About Earthed
Earthed are artists and builders who create sustainable structures specialising in cob, roundpole timber frame, lime and stonework. Earthed undertake private and funded projects, run educational workshops and do renovation and repair work.
As artists we aim to make the act of building a crystallisation of creative energies that will contribute to everybody's health and well being of spirit.
We raise awareness of environmental and social issues through a synthesis of art, architecture and technology.
We encourage active participation and discussion in our work from diverse cultures and age groups.We have collaborated with a range of organisations such as Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetland Trust,The Royal Albert Museum, Exeter, in conjunction with West Exe Children's Centre, Manchester City Council,Derbyshire City Council in conjunction with Green Health Partnership,Groundworks, Community Composting Network, Venture Scotland, and Community Supportive Farming and worked with a diversity of groups from people with mental health problems and learning difficulties to school and refugee groups.
Our educational workshops provide hands on learning experiences which enable people to access their own creativity and bring about positive change in their own lives, communities and environment.
Earthed conduct hands on research and development into natural building techniques and materials. We aim to inspire and encourage other individuals and groups interested in sustainable methods of building.
