'Sunwheel House'
The wettest Summer on record for 100 years according to the MET office and with Carmarthen being one of the wettest places we have ever built, we had the ominous task of building a 3 bedroom cob and hempcrete house for clients in these rather 'trying' conditions! Needless to say it is one project that will be hard to forget for numerous reasons!

The unique natural build is ‘ of the landscape’. The mass of the cob walls give the overall look a solid feel rooted to the ground from which it grows.
Curvilinear features reflect the flowing forms of nature (both exterior and interior such as the gentle curved window reveals) and will be enhanced by the soft lime and earth plasters and natural finishes.
The Douglas fir waney edge timber panels (with hempcrete insulation) on the North/South side of the house provides a natural and textural contrast to the cob walls which will age from a sandy colour to a beautiful shade of sliver.
The half round timbered balcony and internal staircase were a great success and fitted well with the thick mass cob walls.
The handmade oak and cedar window sills and boards complemented the pitchpine framed stained glass windows.
At the heart of the house lies a beautiful Rumford fireplace where the residual warmth reaches the upstairs bedrooms.
The wildflower living roof will continue to change over the seasons complimenting the natural landscape around the house. The house hugs the side of the hill making the structure invisible from the road above.

Cob Garden Shelter

Earthed collaborated with Green Health Partnership based in Shipley Park, Derbyshire to build a cob garden shelter which was to be a blank canvas for a community arts project.

Funded primarily by the Arts Council England 'Grants for the Arts' the project incorporated a number of other artists' workshops. Mosaics, woodcarving, stained glass and metalwork combined to offer the 140 participants a varied and creative time and left a valuable resource for the centre and members of the wider community.

Green Health Partnership was set up to offer volunteering opportunities in the field of horticulture and environmental conservation for people with ongoing mental health problems. Environmental arts was identified as a successful and popular activity with their regular participants.

'Sunwheel House'

Having gained planning permission for the 'Sunwheel House' Bronwydd, Carmarthenshire last year, we are excited to have started work on it this Winter where we are currently building the timber components for the build in our workshop in Bristol. We will be moving on site in the Spring to start building the walls for this 3 bedroom cob house. Other features include two timber frame panels with hemp crete on the north and east walls, a half round timbered staircase and balcony, a rumford fireplace and a wildflower and sedum living roof. We look forward to seeing it develop over the coming months.
